In the world of kitchen design, trends may come and go, but one style has stood the test of time with its enduring appeal and timeless elegance—the Shaker kitchen.

Inspired by the Shaker movement, a religious sect that valued simplicity, functionality, and craftsmanship, Shaker kitchens have become synonymous with classic design and practicality. In this blog post, we will delve into the distinctive features, benefits, and enduring charm of Shaker kitchens.

The Shaker style originated in the late 18th century, with the Shaker religious community in the United States. Known for their minimalist and utilitarian approach to life, Shakers designed furniture and interiors that reflected their principles of simplicity and functionality. The Shaker kitchen emerged because of these principles, characterised by clean lines, minimal ornamentation, and a focus on craftsmanship.

Clean Lines and Simplicity

Shaker kitchens are defined by their clean and uncluttered lines. Cabinet doors typically feature a recessed panel, and the overall design emphasizes simplicity without sacrificing sophistication. This design choice allows a Shaker kitchen to seamlessly blend with various interior styles.

Shaker kitchens can be styled to be traditional or contemporary depending on the fixtures and fittings used. The classic door design does not change but the worktops, lighting, appliances and ironmongery can all have a huge impact on the overall feel of the kitchen

This is an example (below) of a very traditional shaker kitchen in a period home in Frome. It has real marble worktops, a feature Aga, oak interiors and traditional brass ironmongery and a neutral, sophisticated colour scheme.

In comparison this vibrant green shaker kitchen is more contemporary. It was part of a period house renovation in a dark, half basement space. The choice of the fresh colour scheme with simple white worktops and oak details adds a more modern twist on the classic door style.

Shaker Craftsmanship

Craftsmanship is at the heart of all Shaker design. The cabinets are often made of high-quality, durable wood, showcasing meticulous workmanship. The attention to detail in construction adds to the longevity of a Shaker kitchen, making them a wise investment for homeowners.

Our Shaker kitchens are made from solid pine board, manufactured in Scandinavia and sourced from a local supplier. The doors and frames are made from English Ash with birch plywood panels, the doors are hung on solid brass butt hinges and finished in environmentally-friendly paints.

Modern or Traditional Finish

Shaker kitchens are incredibly versatile when it comes to finishes. While traditional Shaker kitchens often feature natural wood finishes, modern interpretations may include painted cabinets in a wide array of colours. This adaptability allows homeowners to personalize their kitchen while still embracing the timeless Shaker aesthetic.

Practicality is a fundamental aspect of Shaker kitchens. The design prioritises functionality, with ample storage space and ergonomic layouts. This makes Shaker kitchens not only visually appealing but also highly efficient for daily use. They eschew fussy design for simple storage solutions such a open shelves and dressers.
