Custom Media Units

Creating a Clutter-Free Home for Technology

A custom media unit can provide a much-needed space for all of our home’s technology. They can house cables, hide plug sockets and create a focal point for a room.

Love it or hate it, technology is here to stay and our homes need to adapt. In period homes this can often be a challenge as room layouts are not designed to house televisions, music systems or game consoles.

Media units can be designed to sit within alcoves, be a simple row of cupboards or become a feature wall. They can also be very traditional in a painted shaker style or very contemporary with a sleek and modern design.

Frome Interiors have a wealth of experience designing and making custom media units. David can advise you on managing lighting, cables and power to create a clutter-free design that looks great and is very practical. A media unit needs to work with the technology you have but be flexible in case technology changes in the future.

The advantage of a handmade bespoke media unit is that you can ensure every piece of technology that you own and use is catered for. Say goodbye to trailing cables in a jumble, and having to reorganize each box every time the kids want to go on the Playstation!

Traditional or Contemporary?

In a traditional period home media units are often located in alcoves, allowing features like a fireplace or wood burning stove to be the focal point of the room. Our handmade, painted, shaker style media units are made from English Ash and painted in a colour of your choice. We can work with quirky and unique spaces to create a really functional piece of furniture that works for you.

In a modern house there is more potential to use a custom media unit as the main feature in the room. You might want to include a contemporary electric fire within the unit or allow the television to be the focus. You could create a cinema style room with built-in speakers and a plenty of future proofed design. A contemporary media unit can include built-in LED lighting and be made from wide choice of real wood veneers or laminates.

Designing a Custom Media Unit

The first step in creating your custom media unit would be to get in touch with a brief description of what you are looking for and if possible, some dimensions of the space. Alternatively, you could book a consultation with Charlotte and discuss your ideas over the phone or via zoom. It is good to know how you want your media unit to work. You could measure your existing unit or provide us with some details about what space you need for things like a television and set top boxes.

Once Charlotte has a brief and some dimensions, she can put together a drawing and an estimate which will be emailed to you. If you want to know more about how our design process works you can read about it here or check out our FAQs.

David custom made us a beautiful floating media unit back in the summer. He was able to draw up a few different ideas, taking our room into account, so we could choose our favourite design.

The unit is fantastic. Top notch quality. We will definitely be using Frome Interiors again in the future!

Katie

David is an incredible craftsman who took time to understand our brief, was very supportive throughout design and build phases, was very patient when work delayed and exceeded our expectations.

A very polite and careful individual who was pleasure to deal with. Highly recommended.
