Shaker Oak Desk: An Elegant Home Office Solution

The Frome Interiors shaker oak desk was designed for the Homebuilding and Renovating show held at the Bath and West Showground in November 2021.

It was developed after designing several similar office solutions for clients and wanting to create a stylish and practical workspace suitable for our need to work from home.

The switch to home working looks here to stay and many people who move to Somerset were already doing it before the pandemic. Creating a dedicated workspace is so important to separate work life from home life.

It can also help you to feel organised and more productive. I have worked from the kitchen table and it inevitably ends in disaster; cables tripped over, drinks spilled, interrupted phone calls and lost paperwork are standard! Not to mention having to clear everything away at the end of the day and get it all out again when you start work the next day.

We wanted to create an integrated piece of furniture that would look at home in a period cottage or a modern townhouse, that was functional but when not in use still enhanced its surroundings.

What is a shaker oak desk?

A shaker desk is a particular style of desk that gained popularity thanks to the Shakers, a religious sect that first emerged in England in the 18th century before migrating to America. Shaker desks exhibit the same qualities as shaker furniture, which is renowned for its simplicity, efficiency, and durability.

A shaker desk typically has four tapered legs, a rectangular top, and a set of storage drawers or compartments. Often, there is little to no adornment, and the design is extremely simple. The desk is usually constructed from premium hardwoods like cherry, maple, or walnut.

The joinery on a shaker desk is one of its most distinguishing characteristics. The remarkable joinery used in Shaker furniture, which uses precise cuts, is well known.

We find the Shaker style of furniture is very popular with a classic design, that is both elegant and unfussy as well as fucntional.

Frome Interiors’ Shaker Oak Desk

The desk has a curved English Oak top sourced locally from Interesting Timbers. The drawer fronts are made using the same timber and the drawer boxes are solid oak as well.

The frames and doors of the desk are made from English Ash which is also sourced locally from Vastern Timber. Ash is ideal for painting and is very hard-wearing and durable.

The beautiful grain shows through the painted finish revealing the character of the material.

The shaker oak desk is on adjustable feet and the side panels can be scribed over skirting or dado rails.

We could also tweak the design so that it fits between two walls or is fitted to the ceiling. The beauty of having something made to order is that we can be flexible and create something to suit your room.

This shaker oak desk includes built-in lighting and cable management to make it practical, as well as a great feature for your home. Making sure furniture is fit-for-purpose is a key part of our design process.

The shelving is sized to suit box files, A4 folders and large books, as well as some smaller shelving for more decorative items. We can also customise drawers interiors with separate compartments designed to store your specific equipment.

The large monitor space is big enough for two screens if required and the shelf means that a keyboard and any other accessories can be neatly stored underneath.

The base cupboards are big enough for a printer and have adjustable shelves for useful storage.
